Overview

Trip and weekly fuel costs in litres-per-100-km

Australia's standard fuel-economy unit is L/100km — the lower the number, the more efficient the vehicle. The ADR 81/02 sticker on every new car shows combined city/highway figures, but real-world consumption is typically 10-25% higher.

Ethanol blends (E10, 91/94 RON) reduce energy density by 3-4%. Premium 95/98 RON is only worth it for engines designed to use it.

Formula

Trip cost

litres   = distance(km) × consumption(L/100km) / 100
cost     = litres × price($/L)
Worked example

350 km trip, 7.5 L/100km, $1.95/L unleaded

  1. Litres = 350 × 7.5 / 100 = 26.25 L.
  2. Cost = 26.25 × 1.95 = $51.19.
Answer: $51.19 fuel for the trip
Pro tips
  • Tyre pressure 10% low = 2-3% fuel penalty.
  • FuelMap, 7-Eleven app and Servo apps surface the cheapest stop.
  • Cruise control on highway saves 3-7%.
