Overview

ATO-style income tax for the 2024-25 year

The Australian Taxation Office publishes resident tax brackets that Parliament legislates. The Stage 3 reform package, in effect from 1 July 2024, lowered the 32.5% bracket to 30% and lifted the threshold for the 37% bracket to $135,000.

This calculator applies those exact brackets and adds the 2% Medicare levy to give a like-for-like result with the ATO's own online calculator. It does not include offsets, HECS-HELP repayments, or the Medicare levy surcharge.

Formula

Marginal tax (resident, 2024-25)

$0 – $18,200 → nil
$18,201 – $45,000 → 16¢ per $
$45,001 – $135,000 → $4,288 + 30¢ per $ over $45,000
$135,001 – $190,000 → $31,288 + 37¢ per $ over $135,000
over $190,000 → $51,638 + 45¢ per $ over $190,000
Medicare levy → 2% of taxable income (above shading thresholds)
Worked example

  1. First $18,200 → $0 tax.
  2. Next $26,800 @16% → $4,288.
  3. Next $50,000 @30% → $15,000.
  4. Income tax = $19,288. Medicare levy 2% = $1,900.
