Overview
Take-home pay with PAYG, Medicare, super & HECS
A pay calculator turns a gross salary into the figure that lands in your bank account. It applies PAYG withholding using current ATO schedules, the 2% Medicare levy, HECS-HELP slabs (1-10%) and any pre-tax salary sacrifice.
Superannuation Guarantee is paid on top of gross at 11.5% (12% from 1 July 2025), separately from net pay.
Formula
Take-home flow
Net = Gross − PAYG − Medicare − HECS − pre-tax deductions
What can boost take-home (or future you)
| Factor | Detail |
|---|---|
| Salary sacrifice into super | Taxed at 15% vs marginal rate — 30%+ saving for high earners. |
| Novated lease | Pre-tax car finance — works best for $80k+ earners with EV. |
| FBT-exempt items | Laptops, phones, work tools (one per FBT year). |
| Reportable fringe benefits | Affect HELP and government tests; check before sacrificing. |
Pro tips
- •Update your TFN declaration if you have multiple jobs.
- •Provide HELP/HECS status to avoid year-end surprises.
- •Check pay slips: super, ordinary hours and YTD figures.
