Overview
Add or remove GST at Australia's 10% rate
Australia's Goods and Services Tax is a flat 10% broad-based VAT introduced on 1 July 2000. Most goods and services include it; basic food, health, education and some financial services are GST-free or input-taxed.
If you are registered for GST (turnover ≥ $75,000), you charge 10% on sales and claim back GST on business expenses. The net difference is remitted via your Business Activity Statement (BAS).
Formula
Add / remove GST
Add GST: inc-GST = ex-GST × 1.10 Remove GST: ex-GST = inc-GST ÷ 1.10 GST amount: GST = inc-GST × 1/11
Worked example
Invoice ex-GST $1,250
- GST = 1,250 × 0.10 = $125.
- Total invoice = 1,250 + 125 = $1,375.
- If quoted inc-GST $1,375: GST portion = 1,375 / 11 = $125.
Answer: $1,375 inc-GST · $125 GST · $1,250 ex-GST
