Overview
X% of Y, X is what % of Y, and percentage change
Percentages are everywhere — discounts, tax, exam results, growth rates. Three operations cover 95% of cases: 'percent of', 'is what percent', and 'percentage change'.
A common mix-up: a 'percentage point' is not the same as a 'percent'. Going from 5% to 7% is a 2 percentage point increase but a 40% relative increase.
Formula
Three modes
X% of Y = X × Y / 100 X is __% of Y = X / Y × 100 %change = (new − old) / old × 100
Worked example
Sales up from 220 to 286
- Change = 286 − 220 = 66.
- %change = 66 / 220 × 100.
- = 30%.
Answer: 30% lift quarter-on-quarter
Pro tips
- •For compound growth use CAGR, not simple % per year.
- •Always state the base — 'up 50%' from $10 vs $1m matter very differently.
- •Use percentage points for rate comparisons (mortgages, tax brackets).
