Overview

Weighted course grade and required final-exam mark

University and TAFE courses combine multiple assessment components — assignments, labs, midterms, finals — each with its own weight. Your final grade is the weighted average, not the simple mean.

Knowing how many marks you need on the final to hit a target grade lets you allocate study time efficiently. The needed score quickly becomes mathematically impossible if it exceeds 100%.

Formula

Weighted average

Grade = Σ (mark_i × weight_i) / Σ weight_i
Needed final = (target − earned_so_far) / final_weight
Worked example

Assignments 30% (got 80%), Midterm 20% (got 65%), Final 50% — target 75%

  1. Earned so far = 80×0.3 + 65×0.2 = 24 + 13 = 37.
  2. Need 75 − 37 = 38 from the final.
  3. Final weight 50% → required mark = 38 / 0.5 = 76%.
Answer: Need 76% on the final exam
Pro tips
  • Always confirm weightings on the official course outline.
  • Hurdle requirements (e.g. 'must pass the exam') override the average.
  • Round-up policies vary — check the assessment policy.
